Burlington Fire Department awarded $135,808 and Oakville Fire department awarded $140,038 in provincial funding to support firefighter safety

Oakville North-Burlington, Ont.— Dec. 19, 2025— The City of Burlington will receive $135,808 and the Town of Oakville will receive $140,038 through the Fire Protection Grant to ensure firefighters in Burlington and Oakville have the resources needed to expand cancer-prevention initiatives and enhance emergency response.
The grant program, launched in 2024 and expanded in 2025, is designed to help municipal fire departments enhance cancer prevention measures and improve preparedness for emerging risks, including lithium-ion battery-related incidents.
This marks the second consecutive year that both municipalities have received funding through the program. The funding will be directed toward key initiatives focused on reducing firefighter exposure to carcinogenic contaminants and improving the safety and service life of critical protective equipment.

Oakville will use this funding for the purchase and installation of a Decon washer unit, purchase of five Self-Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBA), and 6 storage lockers for storage of PPE, and bunker gear while Burlington will use this funding towards the purchase of third-party advanced bunker gear cleaning and inspection, the acquisition of a lithium-capable gear extractor, and the purchase of a Solo Rescue SCBA decontamination washer.
