Economic Statement Provides Tax Relief and Cuts Red Tape

Queen’s Park – Ontario’s Government for the People is putting more money back in people’s pockets in Oakville North-Burlington by introducing one of the most generous tax cuts for low-income workers in a generation and by cutting red tape and freezing taxes for thousands of small businesses.

Those who earn $30,000 or less would pay zero personal income tax on their 2019 tax returns under out government’s new Low-Income Individuals and Families Tax Credit (LIFT). This would mean up to $850 per person and up to $1,700 per couple in savings.

“Our PC Government was elected to reduce taxes and leave more money in the pockets of Ontario’s families,” said MPP Triantafilopoulos. “I’m proud to see another promise made, promise kept.”

In all, 1.1 million people in Ontario will benefit from this tax relief measure. Individual incomes just over $30,000 a year and family incomes over $60,000 a year will see graduated tax relief as well. The tax credit is effective January 1, 2019.

Our government will also help our small businesses by reducing red tape by 25 per cent by 2022 to help lower costs and make it easier to start and grow a business. We have also cancelled $308 million in planned tax hikes on individuals, families and businesses in the previous government’s 2018 Budget. This will save 7,900 small businesses in Ontario up to $40,000 a year.

“The Ontario Liberal Government saw small businesses as a cash cow to be milked,” said Effie Triantafilopoulos. “The PC Government sees small businesses as a partner to work with, and a creator of jobs and prosperity.”
