Oakville North-Burlington Update – April 23rd, 2021“Getting ahead of this virus, ending these lockdowns, reopening our schools, getting our small businesses back on their feet, will all come down to one thing – vaccines. How fast we get vaccines into our province and into arms, how fast we can vaccinate critical masses of the population, the faster we get to that critical mass, the faster we can end lockdowns, open schools, and get life back to normal…… We’re getting vaccines into arms as soon as we receive them. If we receive a steady supply of vaccine from the federal government, we expect to vaccinate nine million Ontarians between April and the end of June. In the meantime, we must all do our part now and stay home to save lives.” – Premier Ford

People 40+ Can Now Get a Vaccine and more Pharmacy Locations Added:

As of Tuesday, April 20, Halton residents 40 and over can book vaccinations at certain local pharmacies.

Who can book an appointment starting April 20?

All of these locations will be offering the AstraZeneca vaccine to individuals aged 40 or older. Vaccinations offered directly by Halton Public Health at four sites in Burlington and Oakville are currently only for people 55 and over. We will notify people as they open to younger age groups.

Pregnant Individuals Now Eligible for the COVID-19 VaccineStarting April 23, all pregnant individuals will be eligible for vaccination under the highest risk health conditions as part of Phase Two of the Ontario governments vaccine rollout. Pregnant individuals can book an appointment through the provincial call centre at 1-888-999-6488.

Investing in Oakville North-Burlington Schools to Protect Against COVID-19

The governments of Canada and Ontario are investing up to $3.7 million in 32 schools in Oakville North-Burlington to upgrade infrastructure and protect against COVID-19. The funding is being provided through the COVID-19 Reliance Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
The funding will support building retrofits, updates and upgrades to their schools and co-located childcare facilities. Projects can include HVAC renovations to improve air quality, installing water bottle refilling stations to improve access to safe drinking water, and space reconfigurations such as new walls and doors to enhance physical distancing.

Ontario Legislature Passes Motion to Expand the Greenbelt

On Wednesday April 21st the Ontario Legislature passed my motion to expand Ontario’s Greenbelt. The motion called on the Ontario Government to expand the Greenbelt surrounding the GTA, which would include protecting the Paris Galt Moraine as well as many environmentally sensitive river valleys in urban areas.
Ontario’s Greenbelt protects farmlands, forests, wetlands and watersheds. In February the Ontario Government launched a 60-day consultation to seek the public’s advice on plans to expand the Greenbelt. This consultation is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to grow the Greenbelt and could result in the largest expansion of the Greenbelt since 2005.
Our green spaces, parks and conservation areas are the living, breathing hearts of our communities. In Oakville North–Burlington, we have the privilege to border on the protected lands in the greenbelt that surround the GTA. As MPP for Oakville North–Burlington, I remain steadfast in my commitment to protecting our province’s vital green spaces, and I know that our Premier and government share this commitment.

With the recent and alarming rise in case numbers and younger people becoming infected, it is vital that we do our part as a community to alleviate pressure on our hospitals. This week I met with Halton District School Board Chair Andrea Grebenc and Trustees Tracey Ehl Harrison, Joanna Oliver and Margo Shuttleworth. We had an informative discussion on important issues arising from the challenges of COVID-19 including online learning, student mental health, special education and others.

I met with Dairy Farmers of Ontario who discussed the importance of the Dairy Sector, animal welfare, and the protection of farmland. Dairy Farmers of Ontario represents over 3,300 dairy farms in Ontario, and the dairy sector is a key part of Ontario’s economy contributing over $6.5 billion to Ontario’s GDP and supporting 10,000 farmers and families.

This week was Earth Week in Ontario and normally we would have spent more time outside and help make our community greener by planting trees and organizing clean up events. Due to COVID-19, we were unable to participate in Earth Week like we usually do. However, we can still do our part to make our environment cleaner in our own backyards and our communities.
