Oakville North-Burlington Newsletter December 13, 2024
“The United States’ potential plan to impose a 25 per cent tariff poses a significant threat to the deeply integrated economic relationship between Ontario and the U.S. This partnership supports millions of jobs and drives prosperity on both sides of the border, with over $365 billion USD in two-way trade last year alone. Ontario is America’s third-largest trading partner, and our supply chains are not just connected—they are interdependent. Tariffs of this magnitude would disrupt critical industries, harm workers, and destabilize decades of economic cooperation in both countries.
Premier Ford has been clear: Ontario will not hesitate to take action to protect our workers, businesses, and communities. Measures like cutting off energy exports to the U.S. are on the table, though we would much prefer a collaborative path forward. Now is the time to reject protectionism and focus on strengthening the shared economic ties that have delivered prosperity and stability for generations of Canadians and Americans.” – MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos
Touring Celeros Flow Technology in Burlington
Today, I visited Celeros Flow Technology, a global leader in nuclear pumps and valves with over 60 years of expertise at their Burlington facility. Their Clyde Union Pumps and valve installations power 65% of the world’s operational nuclear plants.
Under the leadership of Premier Ford and Minister of Energy and Electrification Stephen Lecce, Ontario is leading North America’s largest nuclear expansion and building the G7’s first Small Modular Reactor. Partners like Celeros are critical to this progress, ensuring a future of affordable, reliable, and clean energy.
Together, we’re shaping the next generation of power
Grand opening of No Frills in Burlington
I had the pleasure of meeting Alessandro Checchia, the proud owner of the newly opened No Frills here in Burlington! Starting his grocery career as a clerk at No Frills in 2014, Alessandro’s journey is a true testament to hard work and dedication.
This new location is not only a convenient option for affordable groceries but has also created 50 jobs for our community. Congratulations, Alessandro!
National Day of Remembrance on Violence Against Women
On the National Day of Remembrance on Violence Against Women, I joined a solemn event organized by Sexual Assault & Violence Intervention Services of Halton (SAVIS) to commemorate the lives of 14 innocent women who were murdered by an armed man who entered l’École Polytechnique in Montreal.
I rose in the Legislature to speak about that tragic event, the work by SAVIS, and to reiterate that our government has a zero tolerance for gender-based violence in all its forms. Everyone has the right to live in safety and with dignity, free from the threat of violence.
Building Real Solutions to Support Vulnerable Ontarians
I was honoured to join Premier Ford and Ontario Mayors to announce $75.5 million in funding to help address encampments and provide compassionate support for those in need.
This investment will provide municipalities with the tools they need to create more stable long-term housing and temporary accommodations, helping those living in encampments while ensuring public safety in our parks and public spaces.
Together, we’re building real solutions to support vulnerable Ontarians and strengthen our communities.

Ontario Celebrates the Passage of Orthodox Christian Week
Ontario has passed Bill 167, proclaiming Orthodox Christian Week, starting annually on Orthodox Easter Sunday. This legislation celebrates the faith, traditions and contributions of Orthodox Christians to Ontario’s multicultural heritage. I was pleased to speak in favour of this Bill in second reading debate.
Thank you to MPP Tom Rakocevic for introducing this important bill and to my colleagues in the legislature for their unanimous support in recognizing the important and enduring legacy of one million Orthodox Christians in our province and country.
National Ethnic Press Council of Canada Visits Queens Park
With Premier Doug Ford and my MPP colleagues, it was a pleasure to welcome the National Ethnic Press Council of Canada media to Queens Park. They have played and continue to play a vital role in communicating the news to our diverse and multicultural province.
Ontario Restoring Safety to Parks and Public Spaces
The Ontario government will introduce legislation today that will, if passed, better protect community safety by providing municipalities and police with new resources and enforcement tools to address the growing problem of homeless encampments and crack down on illegal drug use in parks and public spaces. Ontario is also investing $75.5 million to further support homelessness prevention and provide people living in encampments with access to reasonable alternative accommodation. This is in addition to the province’s ongoing $700 million investment in homelessness prevention programs each year, as well as the $378 million the province is investing in 19 Homelessness and Addiction Recovery Treatment (HART) Hubs.
“Mayors and residents from communities across Ontario have been clear that enough is enough when it comes to encampments and illegal drug use in our parks and public spaces,” said Premier Doug Ford. “Families deserve to enjoy their local parks and playgrounds without fearing for their kids. People facing homelessness or addiction and mental health challenges should be supported in the right settings. The federal government’s approach of legalizing dangerous drugs for use in our communities has failed and it needs to end.”
