LBCO Closures

“Our government is committed to fulfilling our promise by expanding access to beer, cider, wine, and ready-to-drink beverages in convenience, grocery, and big-box stores starting later this summer. It was therefore disappointing to see OPSEU’s decision to walk away from the bargaining table hours before their deadline, as was their opposition to offering Ontarians the choice and convenience of buying ready-made drinks like coolers and seltzers in grocery and convenience stores.

We are delivering on our commitment to expand the province’s beverage alcohol retail marketplace, increasing choice and convenience for shoppers ahead of schedule. Ontario can now enjoy more purchasing options than ever because of our plan to modernize alcohol sales.

Premier Ford has urged OPSEU to return to the negotiating table and work towards a deal that prioritizes Ontario consumers and producers.” – MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos

This summer, there are still thousands of places people can buy their favourite beer, cider, wine or even spirits across Ontario. To help consumers connect with local retailers and producers close to home during the ongoing OPSEU strike, the province has launched a new searchable and interactive map of retailers that remain open and ready to serve. These retailers include more than 1,000 local Ontario breweries, wineries, wine shops and distilleries, in addition to other retailers such as LCBO Convenience Outlets, The Beer Store and licenced grocery stores that sell a range of Ontario-made and imported products.

The new convenient and easy-to-use map can help users find a location that sells beer, wine, cider, spirits or ready-to-drink beverages. The map will be updated regularly as alcohol sales are expanded to more licensed grocery and convenience stores. As LCBO retail stores re-open, these will also be added to the map.

Starting in August, existing grocery retailers that currently sell wine or beer will be able to sell new products like coolers and other ready-to-drink beverages alongside more pack sizes of beer. This will be followed by new retailers being able to sell an increased selection of local, domestic and international alcohol products in a safe and responsible manner. By the end of October 2024, every eligible convenience, grocery and big-box store in Ontario will be able to sell beer, cider, wine and ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages if they choose to do so.

The government will continue to work closely with the LCBO, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and The Beer Store, while consulting and meeting with industry partners, local beverage alcohol producers and other stakeholders as it prepares to launch this new marketplace.

Celebrating Canada’s 16th Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon Joe Clark

I was honoured to attend an event organized by The Pearson Centre on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the election of the Rt. Hon. Joe Clark and his government. A highlight of the evening included a fireside chat with Mr. Clark’s daughter Catherine Clark on his government’s achievements which included providing refuge to 100,000 Vietnamese ‘boat’ people, many of whom went on to be exemplary citizens in Canada; and sheltering American diplomats during the Iran revolution, the events of which were immortalized in the movie “Argo”.

Prime Minister Clark’s continuing commitment to public service, principled leadership and human rights is enduring. It was a pleasure to be among his many admirers.

Oakville Officially Recognizes Egyptian Heritage Month

I was honoured to participate in the first-ever Egyptian Heritage Month flag raising at Oakville Town Hall today, alongside Oakville’s vibrant Egyptian community, MPP Stephen Crawford, MPP Sheref Sabawy and regional and town Councillor Nav Nanda. In 2019, my colleague MPP Sabawy successfully championed the passage into law of Bill 106, declaring the month of July as Egyptian Heritage Month in Ontario. Proud to celebrate the rich history and remarkable contributions of Ontarians of Egyptian heritage in our community and across Ontario.

The Ontario government is making it easier to explore provincial parks

The Ontario government is making it easier to explore provincial parks and experience the benefits of spending time in nature by offering free day-use access on Friday, July 19, to mark Healthy Parks Healthy People Day. This annual celebration is part of a global movement to promote the incredible health benefits of getting outside in nature.

As the largest provider of outdoor recreational opportunities in the province, Ontario Parks offers programs and facilities to enjoy nature year-round – in most parks, you can go hiking, cycling, paddling, swimming and more.

Throughout the summer, Ontario Parks offers numerous ways to engage with nature including:

  • In-park Discovery Programs which allow kids and adults to gain confidence in nature and around wildlife through activities such as guided hikes to explore a new trail and other educational programs.
  • The 30×30 Nature Challenge to encourage people to spend 30 minutes in nature for 30 days during the month of August.
  • Take a Hike Day on August 10, providing guided hikes at provincial parks around the province. Visitors can join in on one of the many events happening across the province.

To guarantee access on Healthy Parks Healthy People Day, visitors are strongly encouraged to obtain a daily vehicle permit up to five days before the celebration, at no charge, for the 75 parks that offer this service.

The Ontario government is continuing to build a stronger

The Ontario government is continuing to build a stronger, more resilient health care workforce by investing $10 million to help more than 1,000 nurses upskill their training to provide emergency department care. This will help bolster, stabilize and maintain the nursing workforce in emergency departments across the province, especially in rural and remote hospitals, to connect more people to critical care close to home.

Since its launch last year, over 400 nurses from 72 rural and remote hospitals received this upskill training. Today’s investment enhances the program this year to allow more than 1,000 nurses working in small, rural and remote emergency departments across the province to access four crucial training and education programs:

  • Virtual Training Modules to deliver high-quality, interactive sessions for general ED orientation, core competency skills and more. Over the last year, 847 sessions were attended by nurses from 72 small, rural, and remote hospitals.
  • Immersion Programs that provide multi-day, in-person, skills training to educate new emergency department nurses in small, rural, and remote hospitals. Over the last year, 53 nurses from 26 small, rural, and remote hospitals attended three Immersion Programs and were able to get hands-on upskilling.
  • Specialty Training Fund to provide training education grants to support nurses to complete training courses for core ED nursing skills. Last year over 2,600 courses were funded to break financial barriers for nurses to upskill.
  • Establishment of Regional Educator Program that will increase access to important continuing education and training resources for ED nurses in their region.
