Oakville North-Burlington Newsletter March 08, 2024

This week, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario came together to honour the remarkable life and enduring legacy of the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Canada’s 18th Prime Minister.

Premier Doug Ford delivered moving remarks, eloquently capturing the profound impact of Prime Minister Mulroney’s leadership on our province and nation. It was a poignant moment for all present.

Being in Ottawa when the Prime Minister passed, allowed me the opportunity to pay my respects by signing the book of condolence in the Senate of Canada.
His contributions will forever resonate in our hearts and history. – MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos.

Celebrating 20 Years of “The Dinner Party” for International Women’s Day

As part of our International Women’s Day celebrations, I was pleased to attend the 20th anniversary of “The Dinner Party” in Oakville and the remarkable 40-year journey of the Women of Halton Action Movement.

Contributions from the event will provide crucial support to two organizations – Sexual Assault & Violence Intervention Services of Halton (SAVIS) and Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan (CW4WAfghan).

These organizations are dedicated to empowering women and girls, making a significant impact both locally and in Afghanistan. I am proud to support SAVIS in our ongoing work to end violence against women and children in our community and across our province.

Celebrating Nowruz the Persian New Year

I had a wonderful time at the Haftseen Bazaar in Oakville celebrating Nowruz, the coming of Spring and the Persian New Year! Thank you, Bita, for inviting me to experience the rich traditions, the delicious food and the sense of renewal and togetherness that filled the air. Everyone was very welcoming, and it was truly a memorable occasion.

Celebrating 50 years of the National Association of Women and the Law

Last week I was honoured to attend an event in Ottawa marking the 50th anniversary of the National Association of Women and the Law (NAWL).

Since 1974, NAWL has been at the forefront of feminist advocacy and law reform in Canada, challenging entrenched societal norms regarding sexual violence, advocating for key amendments to the Criminal Code and the Divorce Act, and a new Family Law Reform Act.

Women across Canada owe a debt of gratitude to NAWL for the ground-breaking work they have advanced over the last 50 years, forever changing our nation’s legal framework. As we look forward, I remain steadfast in our shared goal to end violence against women and children through legal, social, and legislative reform.
