Oakville North-Burlington Newsletter October 24, 2025

October 24, 2025

“Ontario is investing $1 billion through the Building Ontario Fund to develop the first small modular reactor (SMRs) in the G7 at Darlington Nuclear Station. The project will create 18,000 jobs during construction and 3,700 permanent jobs during operation, contributing $38.5 billion to Canada’s GDP over 65 years.
Together with a $2 billion federal investment through the Canada Growth Fund, the four SMRs will generate1,200 megawatts of clean electricity, enough to power 1.2 million homes. This historic initiative supports good-paying, long-term jobs and strengthens Ontario’s clean energy infrastructure, helping build a more competitive, resilient, and self-reliant economy.” -MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos

An inspiring morning at the Fire Service Women Ontario Annual Training Symposium Awards Gala held in Oakville.
For sixteen years, Fire Service Women Ontario has been a driving force for progress, supporting women in the fire service through training, mentorship, and leadership.
I was honoured to attend on behalf of Solicitor General Michael Kerzner to offer congratulations to this year’s award recipients and thank you to Oakville Deputy Chief Kalpana Rajgopalan, Sgt. Kate Jamieson, and FSWO President Tracey Shields for their outstanding leadership and dedication and to all the female firefighters who have paved the way and opened doors for new recruits to follow .

Persons Day Honouring the Women Who Fought for Legal Equality

This week, I was honoured to rise in the Ontario Legislature to recognize Persons Day — the moment in 1929 when Canadian women were recognized as “persons” under Canadian law.
This historic milestone reminds us that the rights Canadian women enjoy today were hard-won — achieved through courage, persistence, and collective action.
In our community, I’m proud to honour local leaders like Florence Meares, one of the first female principals in Halton, and Veronica Tyrrell, whose leadership has strengthened inclusion and belonging in our community.
These trailblazers remind us that equality is not only about holding public office — it’s also about building strong communities and giving voice to those who have long been unheard. Click here to watch the video

Thank you to Frances Wright, CEO and Co-Founder of the Famous 5 Foundation, for sharing the inspiring story of the Famous Five and their lasting impact on our democracy.
Their legacy is reflected today in the women and girls who lead, participate, and shape our communities, our province, and our country.

Province Introducing Legislation to Protect Ontario by Building a More Competitive Economy

Ontario government introduced the Building a More Competitive Economy Act and related initiatives that would, if passed, protect and strengthen the province’s economy by streamlining regulatory processes, championing local businesses, advancing labour mobility and increasing competitiveness. Ontario Supporting Worker Mobility Across Canada

As part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario by building a more competitive and resilient economy, Ontario will soon introduce legislation to support greater worker mobility across Canada. The proposed legislation, which will be introduced next week, will advance the government’s ongoing work to build a more united and resilient Canadian economy by expanding “as of right” provisions for Canadian workers licensed and credentialed in other provinces and territories, particularly health-care workers, and move forward with automatic recognition of credentials for doctors and nurses from the rest of Canada
