“Today, I had the pleasure of visiting four fantastic small businesses in Oakville North-Burlington, as part of Small Business Week.

I was inspired by Guiding Light Autism Services which provides supports for children with autism and their families and is truly making a difference.

Then, I dropped by Daylight Bar and Grill a new go-to spot for great food and a warm inviting atmosphere.

At The Blue Café, I saw how small businesses bring culture and connection to our neighbourhoods.

My last stop, was Bombay Grocers, a store that adds so much to our local food scene with its wide variety of international products.

Small businesses like these are the backbone of our province, making up 98% of all businesses in Ontario. They create jobs, drive our economy and keep our communities thriving.

Let’s continue to support them as they grow and thrive in our community.”  MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos

Ontario Expanding Learn and Stay Grant to Train More Family Doctors in Ontario

To help close the remaining 10 per cent gap of people who do not have access to a regular health-care provider, the Ontario government is breaking down barriers for Ontario students to become family doctors by expanding the Learn and Stay grant to include family medicine. The province is also requiring medical schools to prioritize seats for Ontario residents, helping ensure more doctors who study in Ontario treat Ontario patients rather than leaving the province after their studies.

“Today’s announcement is the latest step in our plan to connect every person in Ontario, no matter where they live, to primary care,” said Premier Doug Ford. “We’re training more family doctors than ever before, helping them live, learn and stay in Ontario, and we’re helping Ontario students support and remain in our province by prioritizing them for medical school seats in Ontario schools.”

Ontario Reducing Costs for Future Homeowners

The Ontario government is removing barriers that slow the construction of new homes and businesses by making it easier and more affordable to connect to the province’s world-class clean electricity grid.

According to Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator, the province’s demand for electricity is forecast to increase by 75 per cent by 2050. That includes growing demand from new homes and industry, each of which will need to be connected to the province’s growing grid. Under existing rules, the process can be slow and burden homebuyers and new businesses with unreasonable costs.

Ontario Tackling Gridlock to Save Drivers Time

Ontario government introduced the Reducing Gridlock, Saving You Time Actto tackle gridlock and make life easier for drivers. The legislation, if passed, would allow the province to build highways faster, including through a new Highway 413 Act that would create a new, accelerated environmental assessment process for the construction of Highway 413 and the extensions of Highway 410 and 427. It would also exempt certain early works on Highway 413 that are near or adjacent to existing infrastructure and would have minimal environmental impacts from this process, to help get construction started without any more delay.

“With the worst travel times in North America, gridlock in Ontario is at a tipping point, and we need to act now,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is saving drivers money and getting traffic moving again, including by building critical new highways like Highway 413 and the Bradford Bypass. With this proposed legislation, we’re also speeding up approvals on early works for Highway 413 so we can get shovels in the ground as soon as possible.”

Ontario Tackles Energy Demand by Introducing Affordable Energy Act

The Ontario government is introducing legislation that would, if passed, enable the implementation of the province’s first-ever integrated energy plan which will ensure the entire energy sector is aligned behind the government’s pro-growth agenda. The Affordable Energy Act would also prioritize zero-emissions nuclear energy as the province’s grid expands, support the government’s significant expansion of energy efficiency programs to help families save money, help get more electric vehicle (EV) chargers built and reduce “last-mile” connection costs for electricity infrastructure.

“Energy demand is increasing quickly and our government will deliver the province’s first integrated energy plan to ensure we build for the future, with a focus on keeping energy rates affordable,” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Energy and Electrification. “The Affordable Energy Act lays the groundwork for large-scale energy expansion, more affordable homes, expanded energy efficiency programs and more – all focused on saving families their hard earned money. That is why we have and will continue to vigorously oppose the punitive Carbon Tax.”
