Thank you to TechPlace, Burlington Economic Development, Innovation Factory, and Angel One Investor Network for the opportunity to attend the Annual TechPlace Open House. Halton’s tech strength is a critical component to positioning our region as a cornerstone of one of the largest technology hubs in North America.

As Ontario continues to lead in innovation, our government has worked diligently under the leadership of Premier Ford to create the conditions for success in the tech sector. Since being elected, we have facilitated the creation of over 100,000 tech jobs, attracted more than $16 billion in investments, and led the nation in venture capital deals.

Our government is committed to fostering further growth by investing in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, 5G, and clean technologies, ensuring Ontario remains a global leader in technology and innovation. – MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos

Construction Now Underway Along the Entire Ontario Line
The Ontario government has officially begun work along all parts of the Ontario Line subway, marking a significant milestone in the province’s plan to bring nearly 230,000 people within walking distance of fast and convenient public transit. Under the final contract, work has begun to build the Don Valley Crossing Bridge and the West Don Crossing Bridge, which will carry Ontario Line trains across the Don Valley toward the downtown core.

The Ontario Line will exit an underground tunnel on the east side of the Don Valley at Minton Place, south of the Leaside Bridge. The line will then travel over the valley on the new Don Valley Crossing and West Don Crossing bridges, connecting to elevated guideways through Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park, cutting transit times by more than half for families and workers along the line.

After beginning excavation for the Ontario Line’s King-Bathurst, Moss Park and Queen-Spadina stations and breaking ground at Pape Station, crews will soon start excavating Corktown and Osgoode stations. Corktown Station will give thousands of riders access to the nearby Distillery District while the Ontario Line Osgoode Station will link directly to the TTC’s Line 1 (Yonge-University) and give more than 12,000 daily rush-hour commuters a new, vital interchange connection that will help reduce crowding at Union Station by 14 per cent.

Once complete, the Ontario Line will have 15 stations, running from Exhibition Place through the downtown core and connecting to the Eglinton Crosstown LRT at Don Mills Road. The line will offer more than 40 connections to other subway, bus, streetcar and regional train services, reducing daily car trips by at least 28,000.

Ontario Helping Kids Stay Active and Healthy

The Ontario government is investing $15.3 million in more than 100 organizations that provide fun, safe and supervised activities for children and youth across the province through inclusive team sports and active recreation programs.

This investment of wraparound supports through the Ministries of Sport and Education will help more than 13,000 children and youth, from kindergarten to Grade 12, in more than 80 communities across the province to enjoy supervised sport and recreation activities. This year, the government is providing:

  • $14.6 million through Ontario’s After School Program (ASP) to help children and youth in more than 80 communities be active and healthy
  • $550,000 to Special Olympics Ontario to expand the Unified Sport Program to more schools across the province. This program strengthens student engagement and well-being through inclusive team sport activities for students with and without intellectual disabilities
  • $100,000 to Jays Care to help more girls benefit from sports programming, while training educators and coaches on how to promote inclusion in sport
  • $59,000 to Canadian Women & Sport to research the underrepresentation of girls, young women and marginalized youth in sport/physical activity and share findings with school boards. The funding will also be used to help boards identify and address gender equity challenges in their schools.

Families interested in Ontario’s After School Program can contact a participating organization for more information about eligibility requirements and services offered by their program.
As part of the government’s investments to support initiatives that help promote equity in sport and recreation, this funding will create opportunities for children and youth across the province to be more physically active and engaged, and to develop leadership skills.

Ontario Investing in Free Business Training for Racialized and Indigenous Entrepreneurs

The Ontario government is investing $5 million in the Racialized and Indigenous Supports for Entrepreneurs (RAISE) program for 2024-25 to provide free access to business coaching, training and grants for more than 400 Indigenous, Black and other racialized entrepreneurs. This is part of the government’s $15 million investment over three years to provide more than 1,200 entrepreneurs with the training and support to launch and grow successful small businesses.

The RAISE program helps eliminate barriers faced by Indigenous, Black and other racialized entrepreneurs who want to start or grow their businesses. The government is now accepting applications for the 2024-25 intake which will provide eligible entrepreneurs with free online business development training, culturally responsive coaching, networking supports and a one-time grant of $10,000. Interested entrepreneurs can learn more about the program and apply here. Applications close on October 30, 2024.

The online training includes modules on business financials, cash flow management, business operations, marketing and public relations strategies and digital transformation. In partnership with DMZ at Toronto Metropolitan University, the program also provides one-on-one and small group business coaching, as well as networking opportunities to assist entrepreneurs in developing and achieving their business action plans, building networks, connecting to market opportunities and accessing information and services.
Since its initial launch in 2022, the government has supported more than 900 Indigenous, Black and racialized entrepreneurs to build the skills they need to succeed.
