Oakville North-Burlington Newsletter September 06, 2024
“This week, we reached a historic milestone for Ontario. With the largest expansion of alcohol sales since the end of prohibition, over 4,000 convenience stores across the province are now licensed to sell beer, cider, wine, and ready-to-drink beverages. This new initiative has given Ontarians greater choice and convenience, allowing them to purchase their favorite beverages closer to home. It also opened up significant new opportunities for Ontario’s breweries, wineries, and distilleries to reach more customers and grow their businesses. Our government remains committed to making Ontario open for business, and this expansion is a clear example of how we are delivering for both consumers and local producers.” – MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos
Convenience Stores Across Ontario Can Now Sell Beer, Wine, Cider and Ready-to-Drink Beverages
As of this week, all licensed convenience stores in Ontario can sell beer, cider, wine and ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages, marking the largest expansion of consumer choice and convenience in provincial alcohol sales since the end of prohibition almost 100 years ago. As of September 5, 4,187 convenience stores across Ontario are licensed to sell alcoholic beverages, in addition to nearly 3,000 other licensed retail outlets as well as takeaway options from licensed bars and restaurants.
The government’s phased expansion, which began earlier this year, is giving customers across Ontario more choice and convenience, supporting businesses and helping to promote Ontario-made beverage producers. By the end of October 2024, as part of the government’s plan to expand alcohol sales, every eligible convenience, grocery and big-box grocery store in Ontario will be able to sell beer, cider, wine and ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages if they choose to do so.
The government is also permanently allowing the transfer of wine and spirits between locations with the same owner and/or affiliated licensees in order to help bars and restaurants effectively manage inventory. It is also allowing licensed grocery and convenience stores to display alcoholic beverages in multiple areas of a store, while maintaining small-producer shelf space requirements as well as policies that will continue to ensure the safe and responsible sale of alcohol.
The government will continue to work closely with the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO), the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and The Beer Store, in addition to consulting and meeting with industry partners, local beverage alcohol producers and other stakeholders as it completes the launch of this new marketplace.

Ontario Strengthening the Province’s Craft Cider Industry
The Ontario government is investing up to $6 million in the Ontario Craft Cider Marketing Fund over the next six years to help provincial craft cideries market their products to more consumers and stimulate growth across the sector.
“Our government is supporting Ontario cideries in reaching more local consumers with their incredible, world-renowned products,” said Rob Flack, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness. “We recognize the industry’s great potential for growth, and this investment is just one way we are ensuring its success, now and in the future.”
With over 60 craft cideries across the province, this investment will:
- Stimulate long-term growth in Ontario’s craft cider sector
- Enhance consumer awareness of Ontario craft cider products
- Accelerate the ability of our cideries to take advantage of new market opportunities
The Ontario government’s Small Cidery Program also helps cideries grow and increase the scale of their operations, with grants of up to $220,000 to hire more staff and purchase new state-of-the-art equipment.
These investments support our Grow Ontario Strategy goals of increasing the consumption and production of local food and growing Ontario’s food and beverage exports. The strategy is creating jobs and opportunities in communities across the province, while attracting new investments in our economy.
The Ontario Craft Cider Association is also receiving up to $89,200 to expand the DrinkON Apples Certification, which will help more consumers identify apple cider products made with 100 per cent Ontario apples.

Province Breaks Ground on Three Ontario Line Stations
The Ontario government has officially broken ground on King-Bathurst, Queen-Spadina and Moss Park Stations, marking another milestone in the province’s plan to build the Ontario Line and create a reliable and continuous transit line that connects communities throughout the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
Construction at the three sites includes work to remove soil and bedrock to create 30 to 40-metre deep stations with elevators and escalators that will ultimately connect the subways to the street. This work will also prepare for future tunnel boring machines to create the tunnels that will connect all the underground stations through the downtown segment of the Ontario Line.
The King-Bathurst Station will serve over 5,000 commuters during the morning rush hour, creating crucial connections between the Ontario Line and popular streetcar routes like 504 King and 511 Bathurst. The Queen-Spadina and Moss Park stations are expected to serve over 7,000 commuters each and facilitate over 5,000 transfers during the morning rush hour. The Ontario Line project will help reduce crowding on Line 1 (Yonge-University) by 15 per cent and at Union Station by 14 per cent.
Once complete, the 15.6-kilometre Ontario Line will have 15 stations, running from Exhibition Place through the downtown core and connecting to the Eglinton Crosstown LRT. The line will offer more than 40 connections to other subway, bus, streetcar and regional train services, bringing 227,500 more people within walking distance of transit and reducing daily car trips by at least 28,000.
