Oakville North-Burlington Newsletter September 13, 2024
“Earlier this week, I joined Minister Charmaine Williams to announce that the Ontario government is investing up to $1.18 million over three years through the Women’s Economic Security Program to support the Centre for Skills Development’s Enhanced General Carpentry training program for low-income women in Burlington. This funding is part of our government’s larger commitment, with up to $26.7 million invested over three years in 25 local programs across the province. These initiatives are empowering women by providing the skills, knowledge, and experience they need to secure jobs, start businesses, and achieve financial independence.” – MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos
Ontario Helping More Women Build Skills and Get Jobs
The Women’s Economic Security Program offers training in four streams: skilled trades, entrepreneurship, information technology, and general employment. To help remove barriers to participating, the training programs also include additional supports such as providing meals throughout the training day, transportation to and from training, and support finding child care.
Through the training program, women who have experienced or are at risk of intimate partner violence can also access wraparound supports, including referrals to mental health and well-being supports, counselling, housing, and legal support.
Women interested in the program can visit Ontario.ca/women.
“Ontario is taking a government-wide approach to address and prevent gender-based violence and support women’s economic empowerment,” said Michael Parsa, Minister of Children, Community and Social Services. “Through the Women’s Economic Security Program, we are helping women access in-demand careers, achieve financial independence and succeed in sectors that are vital to the economy.”
This investment is part of Ontario’s four-year action plan to prevent and address gender-based violence. In addition to the province’s $15 million investment over three years in the Women’s Economic Security Program, Ontario is providing up to another $11.7 million through the bilateral agreement with the federal government on the National Action Plan to End Gender-based Violence.

As a member of the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs, I had the opportunity this week to hear firsthand from Economic Development Minister Victor Fedeli and Small Business Minister Nina Tangri on how our government is actively growing Ontario’s economy, where everyone can thrive.
From groundbreaking investments in electric vehicles and life sciences to the creation of over 800,000 new jobs since 2018, under the leadership of Premier Ford, Ontario is creating the conditions for businesses to invest, expand and grow good-paying jobs for working families across the province.
Ontario Supporting the Largest Indigenous-led Energy Project in Province’s History
The Ontario government and Wataynikaneyap (Watay) Power, a First Nations-led company made up of 24 Indigenous communities, are advancing the second phase of the Watay Power Transmission Project, which is the largest Indigenous-led and lengthiest grid connection project in Ontario’s history. Through the second phase of this partnership between Ontario and Watay Power, Sachigo Lake First Nation will become the latest community to connect to clean, reliable, and affordable energy, ending the community’s reliance on costly diesel-powered generators.
Approximately 1,800 kilometres of transmission line are being built by Watay Power Transmission Project through a government loan of up to $1.34 billion for the project’s construction costs to service the remote populations. Once built, the Watay transmission line will connect more than 18,000 people in 16 remote communities and estimated to avoid 6.6 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equivalent to taking almost 35,000 cars off the road.
The project achieved its first major milestone with the early connection of Pikangikum First Nation in December 2018. Construction on the rest of the project commenced in February 2020 and was substantially completed in summer 2024. The Watay line is estimated to contribute over $1 billion to Ontario’s GDP by connecting communities to affordable electricity and well-paying local jobs. Since the project’s conception, nearly one thousand First Nation members worked on the construction of the line.
