Investment will Support Access to Quality Education Opportunities for Working Families

December 21, 2021

Oakville North-Burlington—MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos announced today that the Ontario government is investing $20.8 million to build Oakville NE #3 Public School to help working families in Oakville. This investment in Halton District School Board will support the creation of 788 student spaces as part of the Ford Government’s commitment to building modern, accessible, and technologically connected schools for Ontario youth.

The project is part of a provincewide investment of more than $600 million to support new school and childcare spaces that were recently announced by Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education. The overall investment will support 78 school and childcare related projects. As part of this investment, the province dedicated more than $565 million to create more than 19,700 new student spaces and 1,500 childcare spaces at schools across the province.

“In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have made safer schools a priority, which is why we continue to invest in modern and accessible learning spaces with improved ventilation,” said Minister Lecce. “This investment is part of our multiyear plan to build, expand, and update schools and childcare spaces across our province. It will leave a lasting legacy that benefits working families for years to come.”

The investment is part of the Ontario government’s commitment to provide $14 billion to support school construction over ten years. There are currently more than 300 childcare and education building-related projects in development across Ontario with more than 100 actively under construction.

“The new Oakville NE #3 Public School is great news for our community,” said Effie Triantafilopoulos, MPP for Oakville North – Burlington. “788 new student spaces and 88 new childcare spaces will provide choice and flexibility for families and new opportunities for the children of Northeast Oakville. It’s the fourth new school our government has delivered for our community.”

Ontario’s investment in new and updated schools will create the foundation for a modern learning environment for hundreds of students across the province.

Highlights of the project include:

  • 788 elementary student spaces.
  • 88 new licenced childcare spaces.
  • 5 new childcare rooms.

Quotes from MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos

“The new Oakville NE #3 Public School is exciting news for our community. This investment of $20.8 million is one of the largest single investments in Ontario and will provide 788 new student spaces and 88 new childcare spaces for the children and working families in North East Oakville.”

“Rapid growth in north Oakville has meant too many students being bussed long distances out of their community or having to learn in portables. Today’s new school announcement is the fourth new school in just three years that our government has delivered for our community. Together with our board and our community leaders, we are getting the job done.”

Quote from Margo Shuttleworth, Chair of the Halton District School Board

“We are grateful for the support of the Ontario government and the Ministry of Education for funding the building of this new school which will be designed to accommodate the new growth in North East Oakville. It is wonderful to see how we are working together to reduce accommodation pressures and temporary locations for students brought about by the great population growth in communities within our region. The HDSB hopes that the government continues to work to review and streamline the capital project approval process to build and open new schools which promotes and enhances student achievement and well-being.”
