Ontario Saves Glen Abbey

For Immediate Release

OAKVILLE — July 9, 2021.

Today, Oakville MPP, Stephen Crawford, and Oakville North-Burlington MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos announced that the Glen Abbey Golf course has been saved from development.

Since being elected, both Oakville MPPs have been working tirelessly to preserve Glen Abbey. They had meetings with resident associations and local elected officials, delivered statements in the legislature, and presented petitions against development.

Prior to this announcement, MPP Crawford, with the support of MPP Triantafilopoulos, wrote separate letters to Oakville Mayor Rob Burton and Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr, requesting that each council pass resolutions requesting the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Steve Clark, to issue a Ministerial Zoning Order (MZO) to save Glen Abbey. While the resolutions were too vague, Minister Clark spoke with the owner, Clublink, and secured the withdraw of their development applications and appeals before the Ontario Land Tribunal.

“Oakville residents want Glen Abbey preserved. Thousands of Oakville residents and Ontarians have emailed my office in support of saving Glen Abbey. I have championed various efforts since taking office to keep the land intact, and I am delighted that this valuable green space will not be developed on,” said MPP Crawford. “I want to thank Minister Clark for listening to Oakville residents, and for reaching out to Clublink to secure their commitment to withdraw development applications, and for Clublink’s cooperation. I am thankful for the support and advocacy to preserve this open space from the Save Glen Abbey resident group, Oakville Town Council, and my great colleague MPP Triantafilopoulos. This is exciting news for Oakville and for future generations. A national treasure is preserved” continued MPP Crawford.

“I want to thank Minister Clark for securing the owner’s commitment to protect Glen Abbey from development. Preserving Glen Abbey is important to people in Oakville and beyond, and our community has worked tirelessly together for its preservation. The government has listened to the voices of our residents and respected our wishes to preserve Glen Abbey. The course is internationally renowned, hosting the Canadian Open thirty times. It is an important part of Oakville’s history and will remain a vital part of its future,” said MPP Triantafilopoulos. “As your MPP, I am committed to preserving green spaces in our community. That’s why I introduced a resolution to expand our Greenbelt, which the Ontario legislature passed unanimously. When I was a candidate in 2018, I committed to doing everything I could to preserve Glen Abbey as a golf course. I am proud to stand with MPP Crawford and say, promise made, promise kept,” MPP Triantafilopoulos added.
