Ontario’s Government for the People to Invest $5 million in Burlington and Oakville Transit

January 9, 2019

[OAKVILLE NORTH-BURLINGTON] – MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos announced today that the Ontario Government will provide funds out of the provincial gas tax to assist local transit. Burlington Transit will receive over $2.3 million while Oakville Transit will receive over $2.7 million.

“This is an incredible investment in our community,” said the MPP for Oakville North-Burlington. “This $5 million investment in our Oakville and Burlington community will help alleviate the congestion we see daily along our arterial roads like Dundas Street and Upper Middle Road.”

This year, the province is providing $364 million in gas tax funding to communities representing over 92 per cent of Ontario’s total population. The program provides municipalities with two cents per litre of provincial gas tax revenues.

“Fewer cars on the road will ensure quicker commutes for the residents of Oakville and Burlington, allowing them to spend more time with their families,” said MPP Triantafilopoulos. “Our environment also benefits when more people use public transit instead of driving.”

Municipalities receiving gas tax funding must use these funds towards their public transit capital and/or operating expenditures. This includes upgrading transit infrastructure, increasing accessibility, purchasing transit vehicles, adding more routes or extending hours of service.
