‘We’ve been working to deliver on campaign commitments,’ says MPP

OPINION Jul 27, 2018 by Effie Triantafilopoulos Oakville Beaver

I would like to thank the Oakville Beaver for the opportunity to share some insights since our new PC government’s election on June 7. I’d also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the residents of Oakville North-Burlington for electing me as your provincial member of Parliament.

My official swearing-in took place on July 10 and I thank you for the trust you have placed in me. I will strive each and every day to serve our community’s interests to the best of my ability.

Our PC government hit the ground running and brought the legislature back for a rare summer session. We’ve been working to deliver on the campaign commitments made to you.

We passed the Urgent Priorities Act. Included in this legislation was our action to send York University staff back to work, thus ending the longest post-secondary strike in Canadian history that affected over 37,000 Ontario students.

During the election, we promised to address governance at Hydro One. With the departure of the CEO and board, we kept our promise. This is an important step toward lowering hydro prices by 12 per cent for people and businesses. Our legislation will improve transparency and accountability to ensure taxpayers and ratepayers are protected.

For 15 years, we watched in frustration as the Liberal government mismanaged our taxpayers’ dollars. We moved quickly to restore trust in Ontario’s finances by setting up a Commission of Inquiry to give us answers about what went wrong. And the line-by-line audit, which will be conducted, will give us answers on how to fix it.

Our work does not end there.

Last week, our government tabled the Cap and Trade Cancellation Act. Ontario’s punishing carbon tax era is over. This is part of our commitment to reduce gas prices by 10 cents a litre and save Ontarians about $260 a year. Our focus is to give people lower energy bills and to help get the economy going and create jobs.

I am excited by the rapid progress we’re making in achieving our key commitments to you.

Promises made. Promises kept.

Effie Triantafilopoulos is the MPP for the Oakville North-Burlington riding.
